The great human migration began about 70,000 years ago when a small community in East Africa moved north to survive drought and follow migrating game. That first journey out of Africa became the common ancestor of the 8 billion people alive today. This video traces how migration shaped human history across every era: the crossing of the Sinai land bridge, the settlement of Australia about 50,000 years ago, encounters with Neanderthals in Europe, and the agricultural revolution that turned land into property and created new reasons to move. It follows the domestication of the horse and the invention of the wheel, the spread of Indo-European languages, Assyrian trade colonies at Kültepe, the Bronze Age collapse and the Sea Peoples, Phoenician colonies like Carthage, Greek settlement across the Mediterranean, Persian resettlement policies and the Babylonian exile, Alexander's conquests and Hellenistic cities, Roman citizenship and border settlements, and the Germanic migrations that followed the fall of Rome. Later chapters cover the Silk Road, the Crusades, the Mongol Empire, the Black Death, the Ottoman settlement of Istanbul, the expulsion of Jews and Muslims from Spain in 1492, the transatlantic slave trade, the Irish potato famine, Ellis Island, the World Wars, post-war labor migration to Germany and France, the Syrian civil war, the Ukraine refugee crisis, and climate migration today. Watch to see why migration has never stopped and how it continues to redefine power, identity, and belonging.
